Immune System Support
: Reishi mushrooms are believed to have immunomodulatory effects, meaning they may help regulate and support the immune system. Some studies suggest that certain compounds in reishi, such as beta-glucans and polysaccharides, may enhance the activity of immune cells.Adaptogenic Properties
: Reishi is considered an adaptogen, a substance that may help the body adapt to stressors and maintain balance. Adaptogens are believed to have a normalizing effect on various bodily functions, helping the body cope with stress.Anti-Inflammatory Effects
: Reishi mushrooms contain compounds with potential anti-inflammatory properties. Chronic inflammation is associated with various health conditions, and substances that help reduce inflammation may contribute to overall health. How to Use Reishi Fruiting Bodies
Reishi fruiting bodies are dense, woody, and not suitable for eating raw or as a culinary mushroom. They are used almost exclusively for extraction into teas, decoctions, or dual-extract preparations. To prepare a Reishi decoction at home, break or slice dried fruiting bodies into small pieces and simmer in water at 60–80°C for 45–90 minutes. The liquid will turn a deep reddish-brown with a characteristic earthy, slightly bitter flavour. Drink 1–2 cups daily. The material can be re-simmered several times before the extraction is exhausted. For those who prefer a more concentrated format without daily brewing, our Reishi tincture and capsules are prepared from the same quality fruiting body material.Quality and Sourcing
High-quality Reishi fruiting bodies should be dense, deeply coloured, with a distinctly shiny lacquered surface on the cap. The aroma should be earthy and characteristic. Our Reishi is selected from established cultivation sources with consistent compound profiles, batch-tested for beta-glucan and triterpene content.Preparing Reishi Tea and Storage
Dried Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) fruiting bodies are too tough and bitter to eat directly, but make a potent medicinal tea. Simmer 3–5 g of sliced or crumbled dried Reishi in 1 litre of water for 45–60 minutes at a gentle simmer. The resulting tea has a characteristic bitter, woody taste that can be sweetened with honey or combined with other herbs like ginger or cinnamon. For a more concentrated extract, simmer for up to 2 hours. One serving of dried Reishi can be re-decocted twice before exhaustion. Drinking 1–2 cups daily over several weeks is the traditional approach for immune support, stress resilience, and sleep improvement. For maximum potency, pair with a Reishi tincture (alcohol extraction captures triterpenes that water alone cannot release). Store dried Reishi in an airtight container away from light and moisture for up to 24 months.Frequently Asked Questions About reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum)

Reishi Fruiting Body vs Capsules and Tincture
Dried reishi fruiting body is the traditional form and the one that lets you brew a genuine decoction — but it demands the most effort. Ganoderma lucidum is dense and woody, and a proper extraction takes 45–90 minutes of simmering, not a quick steep. The trade-off is worth understanding. Reishi's triterpenes are alcohol-soluble and its beta-glucans are water-soluble, so a water decoction alone captures one group well and the other poorly. A dual-extract tincture captures both; capsules contain the whole milled fruiting body and let digestion do the work.
Choose dried fruiting body if you value the traditional preparation and the ritual of brewing, and want to taste what reishi actually is. Compare all three in our reishi collection.
Identifying Quality Reishi
Good reishi fruiting bodies are dense and heavy for their size, deeply coloured, and show the distinctly shiny, lacquered surface on the cap that gives the species its "varnished conk" name. The aroma should be earthy and characteristic, and the taste genuinely bitter — that bitterness is the triterpene content, and its absence is a warning sign rather than a bonus.Everything we sell is 100% fruiting body. This distinction matters more with reishi than almost any other mushroom: mycelium-on-grain products are grown on a starch substrate that is milled into the finished material, which dilutes the triterpene content substantially. Our material is batch-tested for beta-glucan and triterpene content.
Storage
Store dried reishi in a sealed container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. As a hard, woody material it is among the more stable mushrooms to store and keeps for two years or more.Whole or sliced pieces keep considerably better than ground powder, which exposes far more surface area — slice or grind only what you are about to use. Any dampness or musty smell means the material should be discarded.
Safety and Contraindications
Reishi is generally well tolerated but carries genuine interactions. It may increase bleeding risk and can interact with anticoagulant and antiplatelet medication — discontinue at least two weeks before scheduled surgery. As an immune-modulating mushroom it may interact with immunosuppressant medication, and anyone with an autoimmune condition should speak with their doctor first. It may also lower blood pressure and blood sugar, which matters if you take medication for either. Occasional reported side effects include dry mouth, digestive upset and mild dizziness, generally at higher intakes.
